It’s cold outside. Like, really cold outside. This means the kids can’t go outdoors for more than a few minutes without becoming popsicles, yet the screen time indoors isn’t the best option either. There’s also a small chance you’re starting to get a little cabin fever yourself. But before you go crazy, rest assured that there are plenty of family friendly activities in DC this season to keep the whole family entertained. Even better, many of them are so affordable that you can do them several times this season. Get out and have fun with these local options.
VISIT THE INDOOR PLAYGROUNDS
What better way to get all that energy out than at an indoor playground! On those cold winter days, pile the kids in the car and drive a little less than an hour away from Chevy Chase, MD to Adventure Park USA in Monrovia, Maryland. The kids are sure to love the indoor rock wall, ropes course, laser tag, and virtual reality games. It’s completely worth the car ride because the kids will be exhausted by the end of the day!
VISIT A MUSEUM
You kind of knew we were going to say this one, right? After all, D.C. is known for the plethora of museums conveniently concentrated between Capitol Hill and the National Mall. Tackling a couple in a single day is easy and enjoyable for the entire family. From natural history to American history, space, air, and tons of hands-on activities, the kids will be entertained. Don’t forget the KID Museum for innovative learning! You may want to spend the entire day at that one.
BE A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD
Sure we mentioned it was cold out, but when you’re sightseeing in your own community, you may not mind the extra chill in the air. So bundle up and head out to explore all the cool adventures the city has to over. Jump on a heated double decker bus and take in the views of local neighborhoods such as Georgetown and nearby communities. Opt for hop-on, hop-off buses so you can check out famous monuments, tourist sites, and grab a snack when the kids get hungry. You’ll learn a lot and get some much needed fresh air.
ATTEND A SPECIAL EVENT
Just because the holidays are over, doesn’t mean all the special events in the area are over, too. The Capital Region has plenty of happenings for grade school children, music lovers, foodies, and nearly every demographic imaginable. There’s an upcoming peace walk and wreath-laying service on Martin Luther King Jr., Day, Wizards Basketball games, and so much more.
VISIT A LOCAL THEATER
In a community filled with art and culture, a trip to a local theater is a must. Specifically for the kids, check out the Imagination Stage in Bethesda, Maryland. It offers shows and events that cater to young children. In fact, many of the performers are kids, too!
Once you discover how much there is to do in the DC area, you and the kids will be busy until spring! The options mentioned here are just a handful of what this city and neighboring communities have to offer! Plus, with so many great places to sled and ice skate, you can count on there never being a dull moment this season.
