The New Grocery Giant in Town

Post Author

Just recently, the Giant grocery store in Friendship Heights closed due to low sales. Yet there are already big plans for the area. Signs indicate that by the end of the year, the newly vacant store will be most likely replaced by an Amazon store. The prime location (pun intended) at 5463 Wisconsin Avenue will be part of Amazon’s new variety of brick-and-mortar grocery store concepts that will soon be popping up all over the United States.

Separate from Whole Foods, Amazon’s new style of grocery store combines traditional shopping with online pickup and their famous customer service. The planned store is just another example of how the Seattle company hopes to reach their grocery customers since its $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods.  Besides the District, Amazon says they will open grocery stores in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles by the end of 2020.

In terms of what to expect, Amazon has remained mum on exactly how their grocery stores differ from the competition. However, it has been reported that these stores will offer a wide variety of products at low price points, taking them out of direct competition with Whole Foods.

Surprisingly, the new Amazon store location at The Collection at Chevy Chase, and the Amazon-owned Whole Foods will be roughly a quarter mile apart. But keeping Amazon businesses close, is the trend Amazon likes to follow with all their new locations.  Additionally, the owner of Chevy Chase Land Company is required to maintain an on-site grocery store, which may give Amazon some leverage in the negotiations and help the location makes good business sense. Sources suggest that the Amazon store will open closer to the end of 2020 once changes have been made to the inside layout and outside facade.

There’s no doubt that bustle of the area, which includes a retail and office development, will give the area a much-needed facelift.
