Modernizing Your Historic Home

MODERNIZING YOUR HOME WITHOUT LOSING THE HISTORIC CHARM

Historic homes are wonderful, but that doesn’t mean homeowners of these older properties need to avoid modern touches. Modernizing a historic property brings it a fresh and updated look while maintaining its unique charm. If you’re considering giving your historic home a modern facelift, here are four ways to help bring it more into the contemporary era.

1. DECLUTTER AND MINIMIZE

Modern properties are all about the sleek, minimalistic look, so one of the easiest ways to bring your home into the 21st century is simply to pick up clutter. Along with moving any extra items off the floor, take a look at the accessories on your shelves. Do you have multiple knick knacks in every part of your home? If so, it might be time to retire the majority of them to storage in favor of a few favorites.

Some particularly busy rooms will also benefit from a deep spring cleaning that involves selling unneeded furniture. For a bold full makeover, replace all furniture with new pieces with a clean, streamlined look. Alternatively, upholster your current pieces for a newer, more contemporary appearance.

2. ADD LIGHT

One of the easiest ways to create the feeling of an open, modern space is to add extra light in rooms. Consider removing any heavy curtains on windows for light, easy to open window hangings- and keep them open whenever possible. Modern looking light fixtures will create additional light and bring updated design elements into rooms. Adding light-colored accent features or repainting the walls a lighter color will also make the room feel brighter.

3. UPDATE YOUR TECH

Our ancestors who built your home lived in simpler times, but nowadays a home from any era will get an instant update by improving the technology. Start by looking at appliances and electronics. Are your TV and microwave 20 years old? It might be time to start anew. Try getting an internet and Netflix compatible flat-screen television that can be mounted to the wall. For ultra-cool modern tech, take that family or sitting room and transform it into a media room and entertainment center. Modern AV throughout the house looks and sounds cool and makes life much more convenient.

4. ADD KITCHEN SEATING

It’s fun to socialize while preparing dinner, but guests can get in the way of food prep if they don’t have a place to sit down. Instantly update an older kitchen by putting seats at the kitchen bar, or adding in an island with seating. Feeling ambitious? An enclosed kitchen will instantly become more updated by knocking down walls and removing the division between it and the family room.
